Dear Angie, Thank you for sending your essay to Athena. You should not use contractions. You should not refer to your paper in your paper. Your thesis statement should provide an essay map to organize the essay. You should refer to the action of the story in present tense. You spend too much time recounting what happens and very little time on analysis. You have many comma splices and run-ons, and you are sloppy about using apostrophes to indicate possession. Your in-text citations are not in MLA format. There is no such thing as “etc.” in an in-text citation. I hope you find these comments helpful. If you don't understand how to organize your paper around a thesis statement or how to recognize and correct the types of errors I’ve mentioned, come into a lab to work with a tutor face to face, or post specific questions here on Athena. Also, handouts are available at Click on Handouts on the left, and then Grammar and Writing Handouts. Good luck! If you have a moment, please cut and paste this address into your browser, and take our survey. Thanks!
