Dear Terrin, Thank you for writing to Athena. You didn’t attach a document, so here are some general guidelines. First, think of (usually) 3 points that support your thesis. For example, “I prefer the beach to the mountains because I like the salt water, sand, and sun.” Or “Faulkner uses character, setting, and symbolism in ‘A Rose for Emily’ to describe the passing of the Old South.” Then each thesis point becomes the topic sentence of its own body paragraph. Use the TEAL acronym on the worksheet to build your body paragraphs: Topic sentence, Example, Analysis, and Lead-in to the next topic. Assemble your conclusion from what you’ve already written. I usually circle back and write the very first sentences after I’ve worked on the rest of the paper—by then, I’ve thought of something clever or attention grabbing for the opening. I hope you find these comments helpful. If want more help, come into a lab to work with a tutor face to face, post specific questions here on Athena, or refer to our handouts, especially "Organizing Essays," at https://success.students.gsu.edu/ltc. Click on Handouts on the left, and then Grammar and Writing Handouts. Good luck! If you have a moment, please cut and paste this address into your browser, and take our survey.
